Residential Rate Summary

Residential Rate Summary

Berkeley Electric Cooperative’s electricity rates continue to be a great value as other services and goods increase in price. Our projection is for rates to continue to be relatively stable over the next 5 to 10 years at a projected 1% increase per year.

We provide rate options to our residential members:

Regular Residential Rate 10/11: Our Service Availability Charge covers the fixed cost to provide service to our members at $.99 per day, which allows us to have a lower price per kWh delivered to our member/owners. The rate is priced for winter and summer season rate, as our wholesale cost of power is higher in the summer time. All kWh purchased, during a season, are at the same price. Multi-phase has a higher minimum charge.

Time of Day Residential Rate Rate 80/81: Our Service Availability Charge is $0.99 for this optional rate. The off-peak cost per kWh is approximately one fourth the price of on peak power, which helps lower bills for member shifting energy usage to off peak hours. If you can control the time of your kWh use during the day, this could lower your annual cost of power.
  1. On-Peak Hours:
    1. Summer Months (April – October) 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM
    2. Winter Months (November – April) 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM
  2. Off Peak Hours:
    1. Summer Months (April - October): 7:00 PM to 3:00 PM
    2. Winter Months (November - March): 9:00 AM to 6:00 AM.
    3. kWh for the off-peak rate, are about 45% lower than Regular Residential rate.
NET Metering Rider: This Rider is closed to new applicants as of June 1, 2019. This Rider was available to residential/small commercial members who install approved alternate energy sources at their home (excludes Time of Day rates). These include solar, hydro and wind power generation systems. Net Metering allows the surplus kWh generated in the home to be used against the current month’s bill and any surplus kWh carried over to the next month. We have a once per year reset of banked kWh after the May bill on June 1. Using surplus kWh with full credit value is a subsidized rate of $5 per kW (Alternating Current) solar PV capacity installed. We charge this $5 fee each month and credit the fee up to our approved limit of members that may participate. This Rider is scheduled to close Dec. 31, 2024 and all renewable members will move over to the Renewable Surplus Generation rider.

Renewable Surplus Generation Rider: This rider opened for use June 1, 2019, allows residential and small commercial (non demand billed rates) to install solar PV or other renewable systems and get credited for the value of solar to Berkeley Electric Cooperative. The systems are limited to the annual kWh use divided by 1,800 for the AC kW sizing. The credit value includes savings from energy costs, demand cost (wholesale generation charges) and line losses. The value per kWh is currently -$0.0592 per kWh. The credit may off set all charges for the month.
